Action Research

Svaraj’s main focus is to carry out action researches on different issues in various places by the staff and International interns. Action researches help us to understand the gaps and reality, to evolve strategies, action plans, and also to implement effective programs.

Alur Pilot farm

Based on the factual data analysis of basin land use pattern, intensive crop pattern and the pressure on the aquifers in Arkavathi, SVARAJ decided to take up a land based action research. The action research was designated to explore the options available for natural soil remediation as well as the accommodation of biodiversity in companion with cropping method and soil symbiotics and mutualistic associations.

Despite of the limited factors such as water and biomass scarcity, SVARAJ had successfully demonstrated that it is possible to shift from the current intensive monoculture to biologically intensive polyculture crop methodology without loss to the livelihood.

The pilot farm was in line with global climate change mitigation measures; in the first phase the tree crops were integrated with companion crops to enhance the carbon and nitrogen ratio in the soils in order to ensure full range biological activity and micronutrient availability. It is essential that the live stock should also be integrated for flora - fauna equilibrium and pest-predator balance.

Deshpande Foundation Gadag

Deshpande Foundation Gadag- Svaraj, with the support of Deshpande Foundation, implemented a one year project “strengthening food security through integrated water management system” in five villages of Mundaragi Taluk. During this intervention, Svaraj successfully capacitate farmers’ knowlege in soil remediation, sustainable cropping pattern, need based farm infra structure enhancement, promotion of dry land horticulture and alternative livelihood development. The capacity building programs were conducted through series of workshops, demonstration/ trainings, field documentation and self help group management trainings. 30 farmers had participated in this program. They were able to produce vermi-compost and compost which kept them affected by chemical fertilizer crisis during the year 2008. Recently, these beneficiary farmers are promoting production and use of vermi-compost voluntarily, providing earth worms and building capacity for neighouring farmers.

Following up this program, Svaraj initiated a small study on upstream slope land farmers with the objective of understanding impediments of upstream slope land farming in rain fed condition, land use pattern, crops selection mechanism and farmers’ profit . It also documented traditional farming practices such as herding sheep camp in farm lands, mixed cropping pattern etc. This study envisaged in developing a need based program for this area to enhance livelihood sustainability of rain fed farmers.

“Centre absent from water projects", is a report by Himanshu Thakkar May 2007,It was written on the need of developing procedures to ensure unapproved projects away from statutory clearances by either CWC or Planning Commision. Therefore, central agencies will function more effectively rather than just promoting sub-optimal development.
