Bharti Patel participated in the Forum on Disasters and Security held in Chennai, India on September 15-16, 2006 organized on behalf of Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace (WISCOMP). SVARAJ, in collaboration with National Law School- Bangalore, held a consultative workshop on "Law, Social Justice and the Environment; legal and administrative practices in water" August 18-19th, 2006 This workshop brought together Supreme Court advocates, field practitioners and academics in order to discuss the spaces for negotiation and advocacy with regard to natural resources in general and specifically water. It was an opportunity for individuals to put forward their questions and concerns about the impact of litigation as a stragegy for social change. Discussions were provocative and very enriching. The workshop is the first step in what Svaraj hopes will be a process of discussion, experience sharing of how best to create alliances. All documents from the workshop, and the final report will be made available on this site very soon. Regional Water Conference organized by SAKTI with support of SVARAJ on April 18, 2006, in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh SAKTI, one of SVARAJ’s partners organised a Regional Water Conference on April 18, 2006 at Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. The purpose of this conference was to discuss water problems in the region and work out a strategy in solving these problems and plan for the state water conference. The tribals from East, West Godavari and Khammam, the NGOs from Khammam, Srikakulam & East Godavari participated in the workshop. As most of the participants are from East, West Godavari & Khammam districts where the displacement of Polavaram is a serious issue the discussions focussed on Polavaram dam. Workshop on “Water Resources in Kerala – Towards Conservation and Sustainable Management” held on 21st and 22nd October 2005, Trissur, Kerala More than 50 participants from different parts of the state attended this workshop. The workshop started off with a welcome speech and outline of the purpose of the two-day workshop by Ms. Bharti Patel, the Director of SVARAJ. She drew participants’ attention to the need for sustainability of the livelihood systems of the communities through participatory approach to water resources and briefly outlined the efforts of SVARAJ in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The inaugural function was presided by Dr. S. Sankar, Senior Scientist at Kerala Forest Research Institute Peechi, Thrissur, Kerala who highlighted how participatory approach can lead to privatization of natural resources. He cautioned the audience to be careful on what they meant by participation. The inaugural address was delivered by Mr. P. S. Gopinathan Nair, President, All Kerala Rivers Protection Committee, Alwaye.
