Svaraj - Society for Voluntary action Revitalization and Justice (formerly Oxfam India Society) is a registered, national, voluntary organization with head office in Bangalore.  Set up in 1978 with the aim of fighting poverty, inequality and injustice, Svaraj works in partnership with community based organizations, individuals, public institutions and private bodies, supporting and building strategic relationship with groups to make the vital case for environment protection and just development In India.  We believe this partnership is an essential part of maintaining the country’s economic, social and environmental well being.

Our major activities in our mission to enable communities to mobilise for collective action in the revitalisation, protection and equitable distribution of natural resources for their well being and development of the nation is divided into 6 key areas:

  • Field based activities with partners and local communities to include natural resource management, disaster response and physiotherapy health centre
  • Management, monitoring and evaluation of field programmes,
  • Action research, policy and practice analysis and recommendation
  • Communications, knowledge sharing and advocacy
  • Fellowship support, volunteers and internships programme
  • Promotion of local and national philanthropy for environment protection and economical and socially just development

The filed activities include:

  • Strengthening food, water and livelihoods security for poor and marginalised communities, through an integrated management of ecosystem services by the communities
  • Integrated rural and urban Water Management for accessibility, availability and affordability of safe drinking water, water for livelihood and the eco-system
  • Conservation and Protection of Environment- clean technology, waste management and rejuvenation of traditional water bodies and water channels
  • Responding to immediate and long term rehabilitation of disaster affected communities and regions – Bihar floods, Tsunami, Gujarat earth quake
  • Physiotherapy care for children and adults with disability

Our mission: To enable communities to take control of their destiny in the spirit of voluntarism, to organise and mobilize for collective action in the revitalization, protection and equitable distribution of natural resources.

  • Economic, political,, social and cultural development can be enabled through decentralised planning and programmes embedded in local governing structures
  • It is important to respect human rights and fundamental freedom
  • Protection of land, water and forests, which face daily abuse, pollution, degradation and desertification, is crucial
